- 1956, the Soviet Union won their first of seven Olympic Gold Medals in Men’s Ice Hockey over the course of nine tournaments
- The United States won the Silver Medal, while Canada won the Bronze Medal, with a team featuring Denis Brodeur, who went on to become a long-term professional hockey photographer, and father to two time Olympic Gold Medalist, three time Stanley Cup Champion, the NHL’s all-time wins leader, and Hockey Hall of Famer Martin Brodeur of the New jersey Devils
- Prior to 1956, the previous eight Olympic Gold Medals in Men’s Ice Hockey were won by Canada seven times, and once by an entirely Canadian trained Great Britain team
